Watching NSA est une œuvre programmatique connectée à Internet qui, s’appuyant sur des principes de surveillance encore utilisés dans l’espionnage contemporain, cherche de potentielles traces, liens, corrélations à la NSA (National Security Agency) sur différentes images trouvées sur Internet qui n’ont, à première vue, pas de lien avéré avec cette agence, mais de potentiels liens indirects.
Deux écrans permettent de suivre les étapes du processus d’analyse qui se déroule en direct. Les images analysées sont d’abord segmentées en différentes ZOI (Zone of Interest), chaque zone est associée à une image trouvée sur Internet et assocciée à plusieurs mots clés. Ceux-ci sont alors comparés à une liste de mots considérés comme des IOI (Item of Interest) par le NOC (National Operations Center). Si une correspondance est trouvée, la menace est évaluée pour cette zone. Sinon, l’image est associée à une autre image et le processus est relancé. L’écran de gauche montre différentes étapes du processus, celui de droite, l’image en cours d’analyse. L’identification, l’évaluation et la surveillance d’entités en lien potentiel avec la NSA se poursuit durant toute la durée de l’exposition.

A programmatic work connected to the Internet, based on principles of surveillance still used in contemporary espionage, it looks for potential traces, links, correlations to the NSA on various images found on the Internet that have, at first glance, no proven link with this agency, but potential indirect links.
Two screens allow to follow the steps of the analysis process which takes place live. The analyzed images are first segmented into different Zones of Interest, each zone then goes through a program that associates one or more keywords to it. These are then compared to a list of words considered as Item of Interest by the National Operations Center. If a match is found, the threat is assessed for that zone. If not, the image is associated with another image and the process is restarted. The screen on the left shows different steps of the process, the one on the right shows the image being analyzed. The identification, evaluation and monitoring of entities with potential links to the NSA will continue throughout the exhibition.
